Cheetah Dead: 'Tarzan' Chimpanzee Dies at Near 80 [UPDATE]
From 'Project Nim' to 'Rise in the Planet in the Apes,' 2011 was the season in the primate. Sadly, it seems like things will finish around the sad note. Cheetah, the chimpanzee most broadly noted for his be employed in the 'Tarzan' movies in the '30s, died on Sunday of kidney failure. He was almost 80 years of age. Cheetah came out in Tarzan films between 1932 and 1934 -- particularly 'Tarzan the Ape Man' and 'Tarzan and also the Mate' -- opposite actor Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan. "He was very compassionate," Darlene Cobb, the outreach director at Suncoast Primate Sanctuary told The Polk Tribune. "He could determine if I used to be obtaining a great day or possibly a poor day. He was always searching to obtain me to laugh if he thought I used to be obtaining a poor day. He was very in tune to human feelings." Cheetah outlived normal captivity chimps by over 3 decades. It doesn't appear that Cheetah omitted any children. UPDATE: Or even Cheetah didn't die in the last weekend. Inside an interview with Dork Itzkoff in the NY Occasions, Dr. Steve Ross, the assistant director within the Lester E. Fisher Center for your Study and Conservation of Apes within the Lincoln subsequently subsequently Park Zoo in Chicago, mentioned it absolutely was "very improbable" that Cheetah live being nearly 80, which records were dodgy at best. Watch Madonna and Her W.E. Cast Make Their Movie Seem Likable in 24-Minute Doc
I am obviously a thundering shill for Madonna whether she’s making terrible movies with her ex-husband or making terrible movies with Griffin Dunne, but there’s something about W.E.’s self-serious, accidental telenovela that’s not even watchably bad. It’s just humorless and overlong — though Andrea Riseborough is fabulous as the polarizing Wallis Simpson. In a new 24-minute documentary about Madonna’s big feature, the director and her cast do their best to sell their watercolored biopic, and I tell you what? They do a good job. Don’t ask me to explain it. But James D’Arcy still looks like Anthony Perkins, so shut up and start crying in adoration. Here’s what strikes me as a little misguided: 1) The extreme importance placed upon the costuming and jewelry. W.E. feels like a De Beers commercial with all its slow-motion carat porn. 2) Wallis Simpson is an interesting historical figure, but there’s no there there in terms of a satisfying character arc. Madonna has always loved controversial women, but she’s ultimately too tame an iconoclast for such a lengthy movie. Still, I dig Madonna’s commentary here. It gives me hope for a decent follow-up feature — though if you ask me, she should try her hand at directing an all-female comic ensemble. If her acting past is any indication, that’s her surest bet for success. W.E. - Promotional Documentary [YouTube]

The Flowers of War Trailer with Christian Bale: The Dark Knight Races to China
Now, the Second Sino-Japanese War may not seem like the perfect backdrop for Christian Bale to showcase his heartthrob chops, but it appears there’s a romance nestled in this very expensive, ornate chronicle of the Japanese invasion of China. The Flowers of War is China’s official submission to the Oscars, and it won’t take long to see why: This thing is too gigantic and textbook-serious to be ignored. Let’s forgive a few things in this trailer: 1) Christian Bale; 2) Christian Bale’s - and forgive me if I’m misdiagnosing this — Blue Collar Comedy Tour accent; 3) The following exchange: “Are you going to fall in love with me?” “…ALREADY HAVE.” Forgiveness, forgiveness, forgiveness. I have a surplus of it today. Because otherwise, this looks breathtaking. I also thought this year’s Fox Searchlight release Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, a “historical drama set in 19th century China”: http://www.movieline.com/2011/07/review-snow-flower-and-the-secret-fan.php, looked incredible, and that disappeared from the public consciousness faster than it entered (if it even entered). While I’m sure Flowers of War is more entertaining than didactic, there is a serious lack of knowledge in America about Asian history, so I hope this finds a way to catch hold in the states. Let’s face it, the last movie about 1930s China that moved me to tears was Shanghai Surprise, and I don’t believe that was intentional. Verdict: A bouquet of gorgeous cinematography and harsh history The Flowers of War opens in limited release this month.

Despite Failures, Networks Attempt More Series Reboots
Larry Hagman ABC's Charlie's Angels redux didn't work, and NBC's new take on Wonder Woman never even made it to air. But just like the feature film world - where everything from Footloose to Conan the Barbarian has been recently updated - TV execs continue to mine the vaults in search of more classic titles to reboot. Among those up next: TNT's new take on Dallas (which mixes a new generation of Southfork characters with original cast members like Patrick Duffy, Larry Hagman and Linda Gray) premieres next summer; Fox has ordered two new updated takes on its early 1990s sketch comedy In Living Color, from original executive producer Keenen Ivory Wayans; and NBC has an adaptation of the Tom Cruise movie The Firm set to air in midseason. In development for next season are a whole new round of remakes, such as a new take on the CBS 1980s drama Beauty and the Beast, now being updated at the CW. CBS is looking to develop a modern version of the 1960s sitcom Bewitched; NBC is looking at new takes on The Munsters, Romancing the Stone and Wiseguy; and ABC is working with Marvel to revive The Incredible Hulk. Just this week, CBS confirmed that it had acquired rights to create a new take on classic black-and-white series The Rifleman. "It's easy development," one studio president says of TV's current reboot mania. "There's already a built-in foundation for what you're doing. You're not building from scratch. With the audience so fragmented, you want to stack the odds in your favor, and if you give people a title they remember fondly, it's easy to market." In selecting titles to reboot, The CW executive vice president Thom Sherman says he's looking for concepts that would still resonate today regardless of whether it's a remake. "Could the show play without the title?" he asks. "But does the title give you an added benefit, marketing-wise?" Sherman and The CW have successfully brought back new versions of Beverly Hills, 90210 and La Femme Nikita. Other reboots that have worked in recent years include CBS' Hawaii Five-0 and Syfy's Battlestar Galactica (in a rare case of a remake that's universally considered better than the original); MTV hopes to have a hit with the just-relaunched Beavis and Butt-head. But like most TV series, reboot failures far outweigh the success stories. Joining Charlie's Angels in the primetime graveyard are plenty of other recent attempts at reviving old favorites, including Bionic Woman, Knight Rider, V and Melrose Place. "Are we all fooling ourselves that a title helps increase your chances?" asks one studio exec. "Most of them haven't worked." And yet the networks are still bullish on remakes. Despite their limited success rate, reboots provide immediate built-in awareness - and in this age of hypercompetition in primetime, TV execs can't resist anything that might give them an edge. "I think there's a lot of fear right now about taking chances on original content," says one studio executive. "They're looking for how they can hedge their bets. There's so much development t the networks are less about [story] and more about branding." But it's a double-edged sword. Sometimes viewers have such strong memories of an original that the new version can never compare. Even shows derided in their time, like Charlie's Angels and Knight Rider, are now nostalgia trips remembered fondly by viewers - and tough acts to follow. "You have to live up to the pedigree of what the brand is, even if the content wasn't that great," the studio exec says. Says another exec: "If you're just going to rely on the nostalgia of it you're kind of sunk." Adds Sherman: "You don't want fans of the original coming to that first episode and saying, 'That really sucked.' These are high bars, and you want to match or surpass that bar... You do feel a responsibility to the original show." Sometimes, like 90210 and Dallas, that can be helped by bringing back familiar faces before focusing the attention on new stars. In the case of Nikita, so many versions already existed (the movies and the USA series) that it was fairly easy for the CW to introduce yet another take. And Hawaii Five-0 included enough nods to the original, including the same theme song, to placate fans. It's when a remake strays so far from the original that viewers seem to lose interest. The only thing potentially stopping the networks from reviving even more properties are rights issues. With so much entertainment industry consolidation over the years, it's sometimes difficult to figure out who owns a piece of certain properties. According to insiders, reboots still being pitched around town, but unsold because of ownership questions, include Mork and Mindy and The Mod Squad. For the time being, it appears TV will continue to follow the old cliché that eventually everything old will become new again. Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

OK, we know Barrymore's Shakespeare work only from photographs, but Grigolo connects all those gloriously over-the-top romantic poses with the extraordinary grace of a trained dancer in this revival of Gounod's "Romeo et Juliette." To paraphrase Tennessee Williams, who wants realism when you can have this kind of stage magic? Did I mention that Grigolo possesses a world-class voice, hailed at the Met and Covent Garden, and the body of a professional soccer player? There will be quibbling from some crix corners that he's not a true French stylist. He's too unreserved a performer. Granted, his Romeo might be better served if his vocal delivery wasn't quite so full tilt at times. The real beauty of this tenor lies in his mezza voce, which he spins out with an amazing legato. Who wouldn't run to see his Faust or Werther? Grigolo's real fach is probably the verismo roles of Puccini, Giordano and Mascagni. But he's young, he can wait before he taxes his voice with some of those heavier roles. At the risk of carrying the French/Italian thing too far, it's good to remember that Romeo and Juliet is a Verona-set story immortalized by the Bard and musicalized here by Gounod, and that Grigolo and his Juliet, Nino Machaidze, are Italian singers who bring the tale back to its native land. And to introduce yet another full circle, it's also appropriate that Grigolo's nearly nude love scene here in Hollywood owes much to Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 "Romeo and Juliet" for Paramount Pictures. Yes, there's much here for non-operagoers. Machaidze's steely soprano weaves nicely with Grigolo's fine-grained tenor. She sometimes gives only an approximation of the role's requisite coloratura and her energy flagged in the potion aria, but in those moments with Grigolo, she matches his emotionalism note for note. Placido Domingo takes a very stately grand opera approach to this less-than-genius work, and without the dynamism of Grigolo and Machaidze to propel the music, the performance switches to automatic pilot whenever the supporting players take stage. John Gunter's iron-scaffold sets recalls the old Penn Station in director Ian Judge's clever update to the 19th century. Chorus singers wearing hoop skirts should be advised how to walk up and down open staircases without exposing their underwear, but otherwise, his direction creates beautiful stage pictures. Ed Douglas choreographs some thrilling fights, and Judge's decision to have Romeo kill Tybalt (Alexey Sayapin) with a gun rather than a knife fits right into Grigolo's grand interpretation. This Romeo hates just as big as he loves.Sets, John Gunter, costumes, Tim Goodchild; lighting, Nigel Levings; choreography, Kitty McNamee; fight choreography, Ed Douglas. Panel: Concentrate on 'horse race' is misguided
If this involves how bizzers judge a film's success, participants inside a Tuesday panel around the condition from the film industry were built with a couple of choice words for entertainment journos."The media concentrates on the weekend box office far too significantly," stated Ron Nicita, co-chairman and COO of Morgan Creek Prods. "A film could be observed in a number of ways. The first the first is theatrical."Nicita echoed the sentiment of other loudspeakers at Variety's Way forward for Film Summit on Tuesday, who lamented the intense media scrutiny of the film's opening weekend box office regardless of that pic's costs and risks."It's to become concerning the profits, it isn't relating to this constant equine race," stated Endgame Entertainment Boss Jim Stern throughout the panel moderated by Variety editor in chief Tim Grey. "Should you enter into the film and you've got a little exposure and also the film does $$ 30 million, you possess an enormous success. We do not appraise the performance of Chrysler by gross revenue, we base it on profit."Stern and Nicita, together with panelists David Glasser, chief operating officer from the Weinstein Co., and Mark Sourian, co-prexy of production for DreamWorks Galleries, contended that bizzers have to re-think the categorization more "modest" entertainers -- particularly if these were designed for a cost."They made it happen with 'Insidious" and 'Paranormal' there has been some very wise cost points," Glasser stated. "Dimension, for a long time, will make movies for $ten million or $12 million dollars and that we do $$ 30 million box officewe're playing around work high-fiving one another."These more compact budgets, combined using the current economic system and new digital revenue streams, is adding for an elevated openness in the galleries towards the chance to invest in more compact photos. "Without individuals organizations, galleries are likely to make less and less movies," Sourian stated. Most importantly, with customers facing a lot of entertainment options, moviemakers need to pay attention to the standard from the product to maneuver the turnstiles."You need to give people grounds to visit the films,Inch Sourian stated. "What I must request myself is, 'Is there a compelling enough reason behind somebody to go into their vehicle, obtain a babysitter and arrive at the movie?' That bar continues to be (elevated) by VOD, by social media, through the economic system.InchEven though change could be frightening for a lot of business models, the panelists agreed that you have a silver lining."One version of it's a burden, another version is definitely an chance to produce must-see movies," Sourian stated. CBS, Yahoo ride uptick
Earnings, Wall Street plaudits and deal speculation buffeted media and tech stocks Monday, with CBS and Yahoo out on top and Netflix unquestionably the finest loser. Bigger market signs hit their finest point since August on investor hopes that final plans for just about any European bailout are close. CBS shares bounded greater, closing up 2.53% at $25.54 as Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne named the business a higher pick among showbiz shares. The Interest is nearly the stock to overcome this fall. Swinburne predicted prolific deals like ones with Netflix and Amazon . com . com can offset much much softer ad areas anticipated in 2012. "Still more gain than discomfort," he written in the note to clients. The stock hopped greater than 4% each morning to $29.96, far outpacing the overall market. CBS has received a substantial run-up this month, while using shares beginning October at under $20. Swinburne predicted CBS will grow its earnings per share by 25% yearly through 2010-15, the finest rate of growth inside the group. It's the most cyclical but furthermore gets the finest connection with earning money with content through emerging distribution platforms. Worldwide certification and domestic retransmission costs may even cushion the business continuing to move forward. A four-year deal this month that delivers Netflix the rights to air current and future CW series offers a pool of cash for your network together with a significant financial buffer against falling ad revenue. Netflix stood a less auspicious month together with a significantly worse day. Its stock walked $25, or close to 30%, in the finish of purchasing and selling after an earnings report and predictions from the untidy fourth quarter. Yahoo shares hopped 3.7% to $16.71 on reviews that Yahoo is considering a deal with private equity finance finance partners. That could pit the search giant against Microsoft with likely good results for Yahoo's potential purchase cost. Yahoo's market cost only agreed to be over $21 billion Monday. While Yahoo may be fighting, it seems neither Microsoft nor Google desire to cede such prime online property for the other. Are searching at bids incorporated in bigger investor groups but will be a key proper partner. News Corp. rose 1.61% to $17.67 carrying out a major Fox coup late the other day, once the organization won rights for the soccer World Cup broadcasts for 2021 and 2022, beating out ESPN and NBC. Shares of Viacom rose .89% to $53.39, shrugging off stunning box office amounts for Paramount's low-budget "Paranormal Activity 3," which needed in the record $54 million within the domestic box office in the last weekend. Individually, in testimony before a U.K. Parliamentary committee, former News Corp. professional Ces Hinton defended James Murdoch, the mogul's boy, would-be heir apparent and mind of worldwide methods when the U.K. phone hacking scandal skyrocketed this summer season. Susan Sarandon Calls the Pope a 'Nazi' at Hamptons International Film Festival
Despite little media coverage, the Hamptons International Film Festival might have been the place to be over the weekend. Not only did Alec Baldwin and Matthew Broderick discuss the late and great Marlon Brando (among many other things), but the fest was occasion for Susan Sarandon to put her foot squarely in her mouth in a way that would make Lars Von Trier proud. The Academy Award-winning actress called Pope Benedict XVI a 'Nazi.' While being interviewed by actor Bob Balaban, Sarandon revealed that she sent a copy of 'Dead Man Walking,' which won her an Oscar for Best Actress in 1995, to the Pope. "The last one," she said, according to NY Newsday, "not this Nazi one we have now." When Balaban tried to walk her back from the remarks, Sarandon reportedly doubled down and repeated the slur. In addition to those inflammatory remarks, Sarandon also showed her support for Occupy Wall Street, joining a growing chorus of stars to do so, including Sean Penn and Mark Ruffalo. American helmer banks on China
BUSAN, Columbia -- Using the buzz surrounding China's potential becoming an entertainment business giant, some filmmakers aren't waiting for East to fulfill West.Beijing-based American helmer Dayyan Eng thinks his experience working within the where you live now Chinese system has aided him to offer the biz's fastest growing major market."The film industry in China remains growing and changing, but I have not really had that numerous difficulties with the equipment, because I showed up in this area of the atmosphere which i started my career in China, so with techniques that's all I realize,In . Eng states. "I learn how to experience within the rules of the sport here." His "Inseparable" made its worldwide bow within the Busan Film Festival. The pic stars Kevin Spacey -- the initial Hollywood thesp to appear inside an all-Chinese-funded film Christian Bale adopted, in Zhang Yimou's "Flowers of War."Eng is cosmopolitan. He was produced in Taiwan, was elevated in Dallas, Melbourne and Macau, before moving to Beijing within the college years, dividing his education involving the U. of Washington as well as the Beijing Film Academy.Eng combines his experience from film school inside the U.S. in what he's learned in China. All his movies are actually fully Chinese productions, although his crew is worldwide."You will discover plenty of new companies and new money, the double-edged sword. For individuals who've good projects, it'll get simpler, and when you're old on the market, it's simpler," according to him. But everything new money expects to invest in lots of films, flooding industry and undermining quality -- something free air travel familiar with the center part of the past decade.Eng's budgets are small, on componen in what U.S. indies use -- $5 million and under -- although he wouldn't be attracted on specifics. Unlike many films being created in China nowadays, Eng is searching at contemporary reality and not historic dramas. He thinks that Chinese auds are tiring of chopsocky epics and there's an growing space for social dramas. Eng states he written "Inseparable" to become Chinese story though an international perspective. Spacey plays Chuck, a u . s . states expatriate inside the southern capital of scotland - Guangzhou -- China's third-greatest city plus an important industrial center and port. He lives next door from the lower-on-his-luck white-colored-collar professional, carried out by Hong Kong heartthrob Kevin Wu. Chuck tries to help Kevin turn his existence around."('Inseparable') handles the issues of coping with the big guy and greedy companies," Eng states, "also this didn't matter where Chuck came from from. It felt as being a natural step will be able to discover as we (could) get yourself a Hollywood actor for your part, since i have am bilingual and bicultural." Wu have been attached, so when Spacey saw the script, he came onboard too.Eng's had past landing top talent for his films. His previous pic, 2005's "Waiting Alone," a contempo drama about several well-off Beijing hipsters, featured Chow Yun-body body fat, and starred Xia Yu, Li Bingbing and Gong Beibi, who also stars in "Inseparable," as Kevin's wife. Eng's next pic, a heist/action movie, is striving to shoot in Hong Kong next season. Contact the number newsroom at news@variety.com

'Titanic' in 3D: 9 Things Learned While Watching Early Footage With James Cameron
On Tuesday morning, eight separate scenes of 'Titanic' -- now converted to include the dimension of depth (scientists call this "3D") -- were screened for the press. Director James Cameron (who spoke one-on-one with Moviefone last night) was also in attendance to discuss what's in store for the public when we all head back to 'Titanic' in April. What's that? You're too cool to see 'Titanic'? Oh, come on, admit it: you're going. I'm going. We're all going to see 'Titanic' on the big screen again. Regardless, with Cameron in attendance -- and with eight finished 3D scenes to show -- here are the nine things learned while attending the 'Titanic' in 3D press conference. 1. 'Titanic' in 3D Looks Absolutely Stunning This shouldn't come as too big of a shock considering that Cameron is directly involved, but after watching screening after screening of shitty 3D films, it was more than refreshing to see what can be done to a film -- even a film not originally filmed in 3D -- if the appropriate amount of time and effort are applied. The scenes presented were: - Right before Rose and Cal board 'Titanic,' "You can be blasé about some things...." - Jack waiting for Rose at the bottom of the staircase before dinner. - Jack and Rose attending a "real party." - Jack and Rose "flying" at the front of Titanic. - The first sighting of the iceberg, "Why aren't they turning?!" - Rose freeing Jack with the use of an axe. - The montage of Titanic passengers accepting their fate. - The last part of Titanic sinking, "The ship will pull you down." 2. James Cameron Wants to be the Opposite of George Lucas When Cameron was asked if any tweaks were made to 'Titanic,' a la George Lucas, Cameron responded, "George helps me with that. I see the example of what I don't want to do." Slam! Oh, wait, he continues, "I don't consider that a slam, I think he considers his movies a perpetual work in progress. For me, the problem is once you pull that thread, it all unravels. Where do you stop?" Never, James. The answer is never. 3. The Interior of Titanic, as Depicted in the Film, is Wrong Expanding on the idea of tweaking his film, Cameron did reveal there are a few changes that he'd like to make, but won't. The main one being the historical inaccuracies of the ship itself. "I've done three expeditions to Titanic. I've done, literally, hundreds of hours of exploration of the interior of the wreck using robotic vehicles," Cameron explained, "so I know the places where the film is wrong. We didn't know when we made it, because we were working with the very best archival photographs that existed, but most of the photographs were of the sister ship, the Olympic." And, yes, Cameron was tempted, but he did resist temptation, "So I had to resist the impulses to say, 'I've got to fix that door... I just thought it would take the film completely out of its time... every film is a snapshot of its time." I would like to restate Cameron's quote for effect, "every film is a snapshot of its time." 4. James Cameron Admits He's a "Greedy Motherf-cker" When asked if Cameron has any aspirations of 'Titanic' becoming the number one movie of all time again, surpassing 'Avatar,' Cameron answered, "Yeah, we're just greedy motherf-ckers. And we didn't make enough the first time around." 5. James Cameron Was Just Kidding About Being a "Greedy Motherf-cker" "That's a lofty goal, I think we should manage our expectations," Cameron admits, in terms of passing 'Avatar." He makes the comparison, "Was 'Lion King' just pure greed? Or was it giving people something that they want?" Probably both, actually. 6. James Cameron Actually Does Have Some Lofty Goals for 'Titanic' Not as lofty as passing 'Avatar,' but -- after what he admits will be a full on marketing campaign -- he does feel that 'Titanic' can recapture that sense of a communal experience that happened in theaters back in 1997 and into 1998, "So that's why I'm excited about the possibility of putting it back into theaters and seeing if that phenomenon will occur again. I suspect it will, only because we know, anecdotally, what was going on with 'Avatar.'" 7. Smoking is Hazardous to 3D Conversion Water has a way of looking like absolute hell after 3D conversion in a, "here's your close water and here's your far away water," kind of way. According to Cameron, each droplet was addressed, "They go droplet by droplet. They go in and, literally, each droplet gets moved spatially forward." Keep in mind, there's a lot of water in 'Titanic.' But water wasn't Cameron's biggest challenge, his biggest challenge turned out to be a circa 1912 cigarette smoker, "It turns out that one of the hardest problems was somebody smoking a cigarette. Where you get a little smoke wafting up and you're actually seeing them through the smoke -- but the smoke has to be put on a different plane. There's no solution to that. So we came up with the solution of doing a physics based fluid simulation of the smoke and laying it in over the smoke." 8. James Cameron Approves of Martin Scorsese's 'Hugo.' "There you have a legitimate, auteur filmmaker, Martin Scorsese, embracing the 3D as a new color to paint with -- having fun with it. That's the way that it should be. It shouldn't be coming from the studios telling the filmmakers to shoot in 3D, it should be the filmmakers wanting to do it." 9. Cameron Doesn't Want You to Think of it as 'Titanic in 3D,' but just, 'Titanic.' "From my perspective, I like that to be the lead line. That it's 'Titanic' being re-released after 15 years away on the 100th anniversary of the event itself to a new generation that's never seen it in theaters. And it's in 3D." Broadway keeps faith
Contrary to previous years, Broadway enjoyed a boost as "The Book of Mormon" rang in the Jewish New Year with another record-breaking week.
Remember when the Jewish holidays used to mean a dip in Broadway sales? Not this year. Although Rosh Hoshanah fell on Thursday, overall Rialto sales upticked, with devoted auds still turning out for another record-breaking week at "The Book of Mormon" and a crowd of converts keeping "Follies" above the $1 million mark. The week's total, up about $275,000 to $18.7 million for 22 shows running, had some observers wondering if the traditional dip for the Jewish holidays was more a product of when the holiday fell during the month -- early September always being harder for Broadway overall than late -- than of the holiday itself. Or maybe sales were kept aloft in part by family auds freed up by school closings. "Mormon" ($1,310,226), topping yet another box office milestone at the Eugene O'Neill Theater, and "Follies" ($1,132,226) were two of six shows to stake out a spot in the millionaires club last week. In general, most of the Street's top earners saw sales rise while those in the middle of the pack -- including "Priscilla Queen of the Desert" ($765,738) and "Memphis" ($722,193) -- dipped, although none of the slowdowns by individual shows were dramatic. Among plays now in previews, "Relatively Speaking" ($664,407) -- the trio of one-acts by Woody Allen, Ethan Coen and Elaine May -- slipped by about $50,000, perhaps because the curiosity factor pushed some theatergoers to earlier previews. "The Mountaintop" ($584,897) played a full eight perfs vs. five the prior frame, posting solid if not stellar sales for a show starring big-name thesps Angela Bassett and Samuel L. Jackson. As is the case with most Broadway plays, both shows, as well as the Roundabout's nonprofit revival of "Man and Boy" ($216,636), hope for a boost from reviews, since playgoing auds remain the rare demo to be notably swayed by critical opinion. That's right: Poison frontman and former winner of Celebrity Apprentice Bret Michaels is designing a line of rock 'n' roll pet products for PetSmart.our editor recommendsThe Weather Channel Recruits Bret Michaels as Guest CorrespondentBret Michaels wins 'Celebrity Apprentice' "As a dedicated pet owner myself, this is a natural partnership for me, and I can't wait to unveil the collection," the singer said. "I know my own pets rock, and I wanted to design a line of pet products every bit as fun and cool as they are." He's not the first celebrity to create a line of inspired pet-wear for the company: Martha Stewart launched her collection in 2010. "Our pet parents have told us they want unique, high-quality products for their pets that are also fun and reflective of their personalities," says Matt McAdam, vice president of merchandising for PetSmart. "Adding the Bret Michaels Pets Rock collection to PetSmart stores enables us to continue to meet our pet parents' needs with a 'cool' line of products from an entertainer with a demonstrated passion for our four-legged family members." It has not yet been revealed what the line will specifically look like, but the company says it will include dog beds, pet clothing, bowls and feeders, collars, and leashes, among other items. PetSmart says that they were inspired to work with Michaels after they saw another side of him in his more recent reality show appearances, as well as his partnership with the American Diabetes Association, through which he gave funds and raised awareness of the disease. Michaels has had a lifelong battle with diabetes and is dependent on insulin. The Bret Michaels Pets Rock collection will be available exclusively at PetSmart and is set to launch is Summer 2012. Michael Ovitz And IMG World And Teddy Forstmanns Brain Cancer: The Actual Story, Including What Ovitz Explained About This
EXCLUSIVE: First, allow me to knock lower this false rumor: I understand for several there's no IMG World board meeting on the business call or else right now to discuss ousting board member Michael Ovitz in reaction to accusations he’s controlling within the board with Forstmann, Little & Co traders to operate and/or own the worldwide management and production giant. Also, allow me to say definitively that Mike Dolan is and can remain for many timeIMG’s Leader/COObecause he was handpicked by chairman/owner Teddy Forstmann to operate the organization. The 71-year-old Forstmann is fighting brain cancer in an exceedingly public and courageous struggle. Forstmann particularly told his board people that, regardless of what happened to him, Dolan was obtain the absolute minimum of2 to three years to carry on running IMG’s global sports, fashion and media business otherwise longer. IMG’s board is purely an advisory board as this is a personal company (and never just like a board of company directors of the public corporation) and for that reason doesn't have the energy to get rid of any board member a smaller amount Ovitz. Exactly what the real story is, based on my several weeks of confirming, is the fact that IMG management has lawyers focusing on how you can remove Ovitz in the board and stop him from disturbing Dolan’s running of the organization or with Forstmann, Little & Co traders. “This prick was fucking around with management. Is he being place in his place? Yes,” an insider informs me. The accusations against Ovitz include that he's “harassing” management by demanding IMG financial recordspressuring Dolan and senior IMG professionals to are accountable to him by trying to setup a so-known as executive committee inside the board to supervise IMG activities due to Forstmann’s illness and treatment andapproaching Forstmann, Little & Co partners and traders letting them know he was thinking about purchasing IMG using the backing of Greg OHara, the controlling director of 1 Equity Partners LLC. (One Equity Partners is really a private equity finance firm that frequently functions because the utilized buyout arm of JP Morgan Chase & Co the industry primary investor.O’Hara has become a significant questionable character due to the Hollywood company he keeps: besides Ovitz, he's also attempting to raise money for embattled Ryan Kavanaugh to purchase out his Relativity Media’s investor Elliott Affiliates. But to date that's been all talk with no action. Same with Ovitz, who based on my confirming wasn't anywhere near to acquiring the cash to purchase out IMG.) Lately, based on my sources, Dolan made the decision, “Ovitz goes or Time passes.” “So truly the fight is between Mike Ovitz and Mike Dolan, the handpicked guy by Teddy to operate the organization,” an insider informs me. “Ovitz is disturbing running the organization while Teddy is sick. It’s like what Alexander Haig did when Reagan was shot: ‘I’m in control here.’ That’s the bullshit he’s attempting to pull. Now lawyers are counseling Mike Dolan.” Ovitz has strenuously refused in my experience he really wants to run and/or buy IMG or has attempted to do this. (See Ovitz’s comments below.) “Of course he’s denying it. He’s a scumbag,” a board member informs me. “But the issue for him is the fact that he cast a internet so wide searching for backing and cash. He’s from the closet. He’s not really subtle about this. He really wants to own the organization, and that he doesn’t have confidence in current management. But this can be a very healthy company. Toss the motherfucker Ovitz out. Teddy doesn’t need to cope with this shit.” The accusations against Ovitz may be harder to think if he didn’t have past attempting to destabilize companies to help their own ambitions. And Ovitz also offers past using people’s ailments to his advantage running a business situations. (Simultaneously, to become fair, Ovitz also offers past helping individuals to get over illness. He's an intricate guy…) In early May, I had been first expected by an insider that “Ovitz is attempting being Boss of IMG while Teddy Forstmann has brain cancer”. Like a lengthy-time Ovitz watcher, I had been naturally intrigued. Especially because Ovitz (despite his protestations on the contrary) continues to be looking for his way into the business spotlight since he left the Hollywood talent agency CAA being leader from the Wally Disney Co and was fired by his closest friend Michael Eisner, his make an effort to bring a National football league football team towards the La area demonstrated quixotic, and the management and production company AMG unsuccessful, alongside a myriad other endeavors. That same early May, IMG hired Mike Dolan to chief operating officer after it had been says Forstmann was going through strategy to his brain cancer. The 64-year-old Dolan at that time was IMG’s chief financial officer but was dealing with the recently produced duties to make sure effective day-to-day control over the organization, based on a memo delivered to IMG employees acquired by Bloomberg News. Dolan also was ongoing for everyone as CFO until he named a successor. I discovered it interesting this had converted into another Mike versus Mike fight. The final one was Michael Eisner versus Michael Ovitz. This latest was Michael Dolan versus Michael Ovitz. Things I discovered was that some Forstmann associates wanted the actual story to obtain to stop Ovitz’s unseemly activities. But others didn’t want the unsavory story to become published due to sensitivity to Forstmann’s illness and feelings. I had been told then that Teddy would never know about Ovitz’s controlling. It was a difficult demand me like a journalist. I made the decision to consider a wait-and-see attitude vis a vis Ovitz’s controlling and IMG management’s pushback. As lately as today The trainer told us associates believe Forstmann still doesn’t learn about Ovitz’s controlling. The folks near to himaren’t sure they would like to simply tell him, either. But since the gossips today have discovered their distance to an online article and onto business wires like Reuters, although within an inaccurate way, I’ve made the decision to reveal my confirming. In mid-May I spoke to Ovitz concerning the accusations I heard. He confirmed in my experience he’d been positioned on Forstmann’s IMG advisory board around the beginning of 2011 before Forstmann’s illness. He stated he came on a single time as former Univision Chairman/Boss Jerry Perenchio and became a member of Live Nation Entertainment’s Executive Chairman Irving Azoff, former Goldman Sachs Leader/Co-COO John Thornton, former Chris Craft owner Plant Siegel, Ariel Opportunities Leader Mellody Hobson, and banker and investor Evelyn Robert Adrian p Rothschild. Stated Ovitz: “Everyone on thatboard I understand. He’s always selected exactly the same little crew of individuals to become on his board. Ted’s done this well for all of us as traders.” Ovitz layed out for me personally his 30-some-year relationship with Forstmann whom he met while chairman of CAA as well as their close personal and professional associations. Individuals ranged from philanthropy andcauses likeschool literacy, to personal equity firm Forstmann, Little & Company’s utilized buyouts around one half-dozen companies including Gulfstream, Ziff Davis, and Topps asan investor and/or board member. “No appear’s happened during my existence, bad or good, Ted’s been my pal.” Ovitz stated. He explained he and Forstmannhad spoken for a while about his joining IMG’s board but “I didn’t desire to be on any boards whatsoever at this time. Teddy’s requested me during the last five years to take the board.” Ovitz stated he stored decreasing until the beginning of this season. Several incumbent IMG board people were surprised to determine Ovitz when he turned up for that first board meeting. “He’d not really attended [Forstmann's] Aspen conference many years consecutively,” one board member noted in my experience. For the reason that same conversation, I requested Ovitz concerning the accusations regarding him and IMG. Ovitz strenuously refused he was using his position around the board and also the fact of Forstmann’s brain cancer to move behind the rear of uncle of 3 decades and/or dominate running the organization from Michael Dolan. He refused he was seeking as well as desired to replace Forstmann as mind of IMG and run the organization themself rather than departing it at the disposal of Teddy’s handpicked successor Dolan. Ovitz known as Forstmann’s illness “really sad” and “just totally horrible” and asserted that “Running Ted’s clients are not something I’m thinking about at this time. My job would be to support my pal who's really sick. Mike Dolan, who's Leader/COO, is exquisitely qualified and it is carrying out a phenomenal job keeping the organization together. He’s an excellent all-around guy.” After I requested if there’d been any discussion of getting him run IMG, Ovitz explained, “There’s been zero discussion from it. The board is centered on attempting to support Ted. If anyone can beat cancer, it’s Ted. He’s built as an ox. He’s tough. He’s game physically and psychologically. Anybody who's propagating gossips is simply filled with garbage. Everyone is shellshocked. It’s so godless. And rapidly. While dining he'd just a little cough. It had been happening in 24 hrs. His existence switched upside lower.” Ovitz stated he’d made medical plans to assist Forstmann. “It’s all I worry about. I call him up every single day.” After I requested Ovitz the way the accusations might have began, he recommended it had been since the “CAA business design and also the IMG business models and therefore are a little different due to the development business but additionally similar. But you will find no discussions. The organization is to establish so well it’s really running well. The representation clients are not. At this time, solid like a rock setting it up together again. IMG offered a great deal the representation business. CAA stole agents. Our focus is around the college sports business and worldwide joint endeavors now. And also to help Ted.”

Are Movies In Store for a 1990s Renaissance?
The 1970s brought us 'American Graffiti,' a film about life in the early '60s. The '80s had 'Platoon,' about the Vietnam War. And in 1993, there was Richard Linklater's 'Dazed and Confused,' about Ben Affleck getting drunk and hazing freshmen high school teens in the late '70s. There's a pattern here: Hollywood may have a habit of rushing out craptacular nonsense before giving themselves time to fully digest their ideas, but that's (usually) not the case when it comes to handling nostalgia. In general, studios tend to ignore the past decade and obsesses over the one (or two) before that. This raises the question: when will the '90s finally get their day in the sun? 2011 is almost over, meaning we're two decades past the heyday of grunge, flannel shirts, Pogs and the first season of 'Seinfeld.' Well, judging from the slate of upcoming films, that moment seems to be here. From romance to action to music, many directors will soon put their own stamp on the era of dial-up. This weekend, Cameron Crowe will release his highly anticipated music documentary, 'Pearl Jam 20.' Crowe -- who knows a thing or two about depicting a group that's "struggling with their own limitations in the harsh face of stardom" (see: 'Almost Famous') -- chronicles the formation of the band, the chaos that ensued after they hit it big with 'Ten' and how they stepped back from the spotlight to regain their footing. Speaking of music, we were already treated to 'Beats, Rhymes and Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest,' earlier this year. Tribe was essential to the '90s hip-hop movement, and Michael Rapaport's documentary was a long overdue look at the rap pioneers. Also on the music doc bill is 'Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone.' Although Fishbone began at the end of the '70s, their two most successful albums were released in 1991 and 1999. The film, slated for an October premiere, will document the influential rockers from their inception to their rise to fame. Madonna is involved '90s film renaissance, as well -- though it will have nothing to do with her music. The Material Girl will double-up on the nostalgia -- not unlike what Woody Allen did with 'Midnight in Paris' -- for 'W.E.' The film, which she wrote and directed, follows a woman named Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish) who becomes obsessed with the love between King Edward VIII and the Duchess of Windsor (Andrea Riseborough). Despite the nod to the WWI-era monarchy, the bulk of the movie takes place in NY in 1998. Another female star known for being in front of the camera will also direct a '90s flick. In Angelina Jolie's directorial debut, 'In the Land of Blood and Honey,' the mega-star tells the story of two lovers during the Bosnian War, which occurred between 1992 and 1995. In other words, Jolie will be hitting the familiar Oliver Stone angle by using one of the decade's signature military crises to illustrate larger themes. Rounding things out are two features that were originally released in the '90s, and once again make it to the big screen (in 3D!): 'The Lion King' and 'Titanic.' 'The Lion King' is already a success, having reached No. 1 at the box office last weekend. We are still not sure how to feel about our Simba getting the 3D treatment, but it is cool to see a beloved family film getting a second go-round for a new generation of children. 'Titanic' will also get it's chance to relive the glory days. There probably won't be the same type of teenage-girl hysteria for Jack and Rose this time around, though James Cameron is likely to have a few 3D tricks up his sleeve. After all, the director received rave reviews from the footage he showed back in June at CineEurope. 'Titanic 3D' won't hit theaters until April 2012. We still haven't heard of any 'Ghostwriter' films or Pixar movie about boomboxes in the works, but we will definitely keep you updated if something breaks. Until then, listen to some Nirvana, drink some Crystal Pepsi and bask in the glory that was the 1990s. Pearl Jam photo by Danny Clinch Watch Movies

ANALYSIS: Behind New Women Remarkably Large Opening As Well As The iTunes Experiment
New Girl Opens Large, Tops Evening The first time in the decade, Fox realize that it provides a live-action half-hour comedy hit on its hands with New Girl, which blew past all ratings predictions to start getting a sizable 4.8/12 in grownups 18-49 (10.3 million audiences overall). New Girl‘s great ratings performance caught everyone suddenly, including Fox’s mind of promoting Joe Earley. Because they is elated today, only a couple of days ago he was very worried since the network’s harmful promo stint of putting the completely new Girl pilot on iTunes, VOD, hotels, planes and Hulu for two main days while watching premiere had started to acquire out of control. Fox had made the sale to enhance awareness for your series starring Zooey Deschanel since the show’s intent to determine levels happen to be consistently high nonetheless its awareness amounts continued to be as lagging. In exchange for acquiring the pilot totally free streaming, the entrepreneurs dedicated to promote the show across their platforms, plus a prominent positioning around the house page of iTunes, which was taking a pre-premiere window on the program the first time. Following a first week, things looked good — awareness for completely new Girl was up by 6%, something Earley mentioned could not are actually accomplished with the network’s standard marketing campaign alone. (Free press for your sneak look experiment might have aided, too.) After awareness elevated, the thrill metrics also started jumping, and chatter around the program elevated 400%. “People were speaking peer-to-peer, plus it was very positive,” Earley mentioned. “So we figured any viewing lost (with the marketing streaming) might be transformed by people who didn’t intend to watch.” However an escalating trend developed. “The amounts started climbing and climbing inside a much greater rate,” Earley mentioned. “When we hit an incredible number of sights, I started being nervous, once we hit 2 million, I started to destroy inside a chilly sweat. Over 2 million audiences had consumed this show before it even opened up!” Fox couldn’t stop the promotion simply because they stood a persistence for their distribution partners but began thinking about techniques to decelerate the rate of utilisation of the pilot, like yanking back on promotion. “But there's no slowing down lower it lower, everybody was experiencing it,” Earley mentioned, watching the large the majority of audiences seen the whole pilot, something rarely seen in free previews of latest series. What’s more, the marketing streaming window didn’t finish until yesterday the completely new Girl premiere, further chipping away at potential repeat viewing. So Earley as well as the relaxation in the Fox brass found accept the fact the promo streaming stint would probably depress viewership for your opener but hopefully enhance the series’ extended-term prospects by compelling many individuals who attempted the show to make use of it their Dvr season pass. While using massive pre-premiere viewing and Fox’s (much less good) good reputation for beginning live-action comedies, the network was ready for any premiere 18-49 rating inside the high 2s and wanting for starters inside the neighborhood of last fall’s Raising Hope, which launched with a 3.1, a sluggish build. The most effective-situation scenario was if New Girl held onto its Glee lead-in. Rather, the rookie’s demo rating elevated by 20% from Glee. How did which happen? 1. The show was good, so word-of-mouth and critical response was great. Nevertheless the same was true for ABC’s Modern Family 24 several weeks ago, and New Girl surpassed even that premiere by 12%. What New Girl had extra was: 2. A sizable, enjoyable star. Fox made Deschanel the center of its marketing push, which ranged from traditional ads and Web ads to speaking video ads in retail stores to Deschanel filming special promotions to air throughout syndicated comedies on Fox stations. In addition, Fox attracted on straight into Deschanel’s large number of fans and Internet following, including marketing the show on her behalf account popular blog, HelloGiggles. Earley thinks the ratings spike from Glee to New Girl might be referred to with Deschanel “bringing in new people” for the network who don’t always view television or Fox. In addition, New Girl had: 3. Great repeatability, a thing that aided offset some in the pre-premiere online viewing as many people who had already seen the pilot seen it again last evening. Overall, we'll probably have no idea precisely what introduced to New Girl’s amazing opening number. It absolutely was “some good alchemy happening,” Earley referred to as it, watching that, because the free setting up experiment ultimately labored, he'd have it completed in an alternative way next time, beginning the marketing window each week earlier and ending it each week just before the series premiere. Still, was there a fast fix? “Yes,” Earley mentioned. “It was Zooey Deschanel.”
